City Council officially proclaimed May 2026 as ALS Awareness Month, recognizing the challenges faced by people living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and calling attention to the need for continued research, treatment access, and public support.

In the proclamation, Mayor Kirt Briggs noted that the exact causes of ALS remain unknown and that there is currently no cure for the progressive neurodegenerative disease. The statement also highlighted research showing that military veterans are more likely to develop and die from ALS than individuals without a history of military service.

The proclamation emphasized the importance of ensuring access to new therapies, durable medical equipment, and communication technologies for those living with the disease. It also recognized the critical role of clinical trials in developing treatments, improving quality of life, and advancing assistive technologies.

City officials additionally acknowledged the work of the ALS Association, which has committed more than $154 million to support hundreds of ALS research projects in the United States and internationally.

By declaring ALS Awareness Month, the city aims to increase public understanding of the disease, support affected families, and encourage continued efforts toward finding a cure.
