The city has adopted an updated noise ordinance aimed at balancing community peace with reasonable residential, commercial, and construction activity. The revised rules establish clearer standards for excessive noise, construction hours, and nuisance gatherings.
Under the ordinance, unnecessary noise exceeding 65 decibels at a property line may be considered a violation. The regulations also prohibit loud radios, amplified music, and disruptive nighttime gatherings that disturb nearby residents.

Construction activity and commercial repair work are now limited to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays and holidays. Homeowners may continue lawn care and personal vehicle maintenance until 9 p.m. on most days. The ordinance specifically addresses excessive vehicle noise, including loud exhaust systems, rattling vehicles, and engine braking, commonly known as “jake braking.”
City officials said the ordinance incorporates Minnesota state noise standards and gives both code enforcement officers and police authority to investigate complaints. The city may conduct formal noise testing when repeated complaints or significant disturbances occur.
Officials say the updated ordinance is intended to protect residents' health, safety, and quality of life while providing clear expectations for property owners, contractors, and event organizers.
