Permit to Purchase a Firearm
HOW TO APPLY FOR A PERMIT TO PURCHASE:
All applicants must reside within the city limits of Prior Lake. If you live in a township, you will need to contact the Scott County Sheriff's Office. Gun permit applications can be submitted in person, by mail or email. The following information is required by the applicant to apply:
- A Gun Permit Application that is signed, dated, and fully completed by the applicant.
- Application fields:
- If information for a field is not applicable to the applicant, enter N/A in that field.
- Applicant Signatures:
- For digital signatures: The applicant may need to create a digital signature in order to sign the pdf form.
- For handwritten signatures: The applicant will need to print the form and physically sign it.
- Application fields:
- A legible copy, photograph, or scanned image of the applicant's state issued ID or MN driver's license with a current Prior Lake address.
- For applications submitted by email or mail, a recent headshot image of the applicant is required in order to verify their identity.
Applicants can submit their completed Permit to Purchase application, copied form of ID, and headshot to the Prior Lake Police Department by using one of the options listed on the right.
*When an application is emailed, in lieu of the receipt on page five of the application, a confirmation email will be sent once records staff has received your complete application and identifying documents.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
- The permit to purchase is free of charge.
- Applicant's may apply for a permit with the police department of the municipality in which the person resides.
- The department shall issue a permit to purchase/transferee permit or deny the application within 30 days of application for the permit.
- Approval is dependent on the results of a thorough background investigation.
- Approved permits will be mailed to the address listed on the application.
- Denied applicants will receive a written notification of the denial and the specific reason for the denial.
- Refer to Minnesota Statute Section 624.7131 for additional information, restrictions, and grounds for disqualification.
- Individuals with restrictions shall not be entitled to possess a pistol or any other firearm.
- A person who makes a false statement in order to obtain a transferee permit knowing or having reason to know the statement is false is guilty of a felony.
- If you possess a valid "permit to carry" a handgun, that permit constitutes a permit to purchase. Therefore you do not need to apply for a separate permit to purchase.
PRIVATE PARTY FIREARM TRANSFER:
The Prior Lake Police Department does not process private party firearm transfers; however, you can use the Private Party Transfer Form when transferring a pistol or semiautomatic military-style assault weapon between two private parties without a federal firearms dealer.
